Are you properly following scrum?

Scrum is the most popular framework for implementing agile. It is simple and effective. In spite of following this effective framework, many people often can't make most out of it. They cannot get proper output or faster improvement. The principle reason behind this inefficiency is following scrum improperly. We will discuss about the mandatory elements of scrum. Scrum is not a process, it is a framework. Scrum has 4 mandatory elements. We need to establish these 4 elements first and then we can impose processes on it. The 4 elements are -
  1. Scrum members
  2. Scrum artifacts
  3. Scrum events
  4. and
  5. Scrum values

If you are following scrum framework currently, please recheck, are you following scrum properly? Do you have these elements in correct format? Let’s become confident on what you are doing by asking some question to yourself.

Do you have the following 3 Scrum Roles in your team?

  1. Development Team
  2. Product Owner
  3. Scrum Master

I have seen in many cases where there are no Scrum Master. So Product Owners act as Scrum Master. It is definitely not scrum. Scrum Master role is not an optional role. Please make sure you have all three roles in your team in order to get the maximum benefit out of it.

Do the following 5 events take place regularly?

  1. Sprint Planning
  2. Sprint Retrospective
  3. Sprint Review
  4. Daily Scrum meeting
  5. Backlog refinement

In my experience most ignored event is Backlog Refinement followed by Sprint Retrospective. If you are not having all of these events, please allot time.

Do you have the following 3 Scrum Artifacts?

  1. Product Backlog
  2. Sprint Backlog
  3. Product Increment

Sometimes we don’t have product increment on every sprint, but we supposed to have some extent of product increment in every sprint.

Now let’s talk about the not measurable but very important scrum element - Do you see the following 5 Scrum Values are present on your scrum members (all three roles)?

  1. Focus
  2. Courage
  3. Openness
  4. Commitment
  5. Respect

Please check one by one starting from yourself. If you find some values are yet to be developed, plan for it. But make sure scrum members are heavily aware of these values.

Here I have shown the pillars/elements of scrum framework in order to help you complying your current way of following scrum to standard way of following scrum. I will go further details of all 5 events from next posts.

    Hello Faruque,

Thanks for laying out the framework for scrum. We agree it's important to have different individuals for Scrum master & Product owner for efficient output. We would like to know your opinion on each of the 5 events. Do keep us posted.

    Thanks
